All-Star Captains Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James will draft their teams tomorrow. Where will Utah Jazz stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell end up?
Things are starting to get fun around the association. The Trade Deadline is tomorrow, and All-Star Weekend is fast approaching, which means Utah Jazz stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell will soon suit up in the first All-Star Game of their careers.
Before the fun can begin, there is one thing that has to be taken care of, and that’s deciding who ends up on what team.
This is the second season the NBA has implemented a draft when it comes to picking the rosters. No more conferences — just two of the best in the league choosing one by one as captains until no one remains. It’s a fun format that gives me some serious pickup basketball vibes.
LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo will be the captains, just like last year. Team LeBron will be wearing No. 2 in honor of Gianna Bryant, while Team Giannis will be wearing No. 24 in honor of Kobe Bryant.
So, will Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell remain on the same team for the All-Star game? Or will they be on opposite teams, like they were over the summer when Gobert and France defeated Mitchell and the USA during FIBA basketball?
It would be nice to see them together on the same team, but part of me would also like to see a bit of a rematch from over the summer. We’ll see which way LeBron and Giannis lean tomorrow night at 5:00 MT.
Regardless, it’s going to be a lot of fun for Utah Jazz fans. The Jazz haven’t had an All-Star since Gordon Hayward in 2017, and haven’t had two All-Stars since Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur in 2007.
Ah, those were some good times. It’s good to see both Gobert and Mitchell get the recognition that they deserve, considering they have led the Jazz (32-17) to their best start in over a decade.
While leading the Jazz to said 32-17 start, Gobert has averaged 15.6 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Mitchell, meanwhile, has averaged 24.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists.
Gobert and Mitchell will finally find out which team they’ll suit up for tomorrow, but for right now, how about a little mock draft? Let the fun begin!

Team LeBron (No. 1) – Anthony Davis

Well, we all know who LeBron is going to go with his first overall pick — his fellow Laker <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/davisan02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Anthony Davis.

Both LeBron and Davis have been incredible this season for the Lakers. Davis, who was traded to Los Angeles from New Orleans over the summer, has given LeBron his best teammate in some time, both on and off the floor.

Davis will be in contention for the Most Valuable Player of the Year Award, as well as the Defensive Player of the Year Award. He boosts averages of 26.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 34.6 minutes.

Team Giannis (No. 2) – Luka Dončić

Dallas already has a superstar in 21 year old <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/doncilu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Luka Dončić. The sophomore guard has been incredible this season, earning himself a starting nod in the All-Star game.

I can easily see Giannis going with another International player with his first pick. Plus, being in opposite conferences, these two elite talents don’t see each other very much. They are both set to be the faces of the NBA over the next 10 years, and this could be our first chance to see them playing together.

This season, Dončić is averaging a whopping 28.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists in 32.8 minutes, leading the Mavericks to a 31-19 record in the incredibly difficult Western Conference.

Team LeBron (No. 3) – James Harden

These next two picks are interesting, because I don’t see Giannis taking <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hardeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">James Harden, the man who went toe-to-toe with him a year ago for the MVP award, and I don’t see LeBron taking <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leonaka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kawhi Leonard, the man who runs the “other” LA team.

So, let’s put Harden here with LeBron and Davis. That’s quite the trio, isn’t it?

Harden is having another MVP caliber season, putting up averages of 35.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists. His Rockets have been a tad inconsistent, but he’ll look to lead the team to another deep playoff run this season.

Team Giannis (No. 4) – Kawhi Leonard

The basketball world has been all over Kawhi Leonard for his “load management” throughout the season, but The Claw is still arguably the best player on the planet. Fresh off winning a championship with the Raptors, Leonard is balling in Los Angeles.

Leonard is averaging 27.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 32.2 minutes, while the Clippers have a record of 35-15. They’d be my pick to go all the way this year with Kawhi leading the way.

Kawhi joining Team Giannis will give them to elite defenders, along with arguably the best young player in basketball. This is also quite the trio, isn’t it?

Team LeBron (No. 5) – Trae Young

Many fans, including myself were upset to see <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/y/youngtr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Trae Young get voted in as a starter due to his teams poor record. Regardless, he’s here and he has certainly played like an All-Star this season. He’ll give Team LeBron another ball handling option in the starting unit.

In his second season, Young is averaging an incredible 29.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 9.0 assists. Like I mentioned, I wish his team had more success, but he’s undoubtedly been impressive and will shine in a game like this.

Young will be all over during All-Star weekend, competing in the Three-Point Contest and Rising Stars Challenge, as well as the All-Star game.

Team Giannis (No. 6) – Joel Embiid

It’s been a weird season for <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/embiijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Joel Embiid and his Philadelphia 76ers. I thought they would be the best team in the East this season, but poor roster construction has them disappointing many around the league.

Embiid, arguably the best center in the game, is averaging 23.1 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He’s had some health issues, but he’s still an easy pick for the All-Star game. He was on Team Giannis last year, and there’s a good chance he’ll be back with the Greek Freak again this year.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #00265D" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"#"> Next: No. 7 and No. 8

Team LeBron (No. 7) – Pascal Siakam

Can you believe that <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/siakapa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Pascal Siakam didn’t make the All-Star game last season? I know he wasn’t playing at the level he is now, but still, he should have been an easy choice, especially in the Eastern Conference.

googletag.enableServices();
googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
});

Anyway, he’s here now and that’s what matters. Siakam has kept the Raptors (36-14) towards the top of the Eastern Conference even without Kawhi Leonard, averaging 23.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

He’d fill out LeBron’s starting lineup, giving them another long player on the wing that can hurt you from inside and outside. He’s a lot of fun and doesn’t get enough recognition, in my opinion.

Team Giannis (No. 8) – Kemba Walker

After spending eight years in Charlotte with the Hornets, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/walkeke02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kemba Walker joined the Celtics in hopes of making a deep playoff run. So far, that decision is proving to be wise, as Boston has looked legit in the Eastern Conference. I’d name them as a dark horse to come out in the East.

Walker’s been spectacular on the court, averaging 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. He’s been just as important off the court too, leading the Celtics both on the court and in the locker room. He’s been a breath of fresh air for them.

Walker is one of the more likable guys in the league, so I’m sure both LeBron and Giannis would love to have him on their team. In this mock, though, he ends up with Giannis.

All-Star Reserves

Team Giannis (No. 9) – Khris Middleton

Just like last year, Giannis’ first pick among the reserves is going to be his teammate, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/middlkh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Khris Middleton. The 28 year old averages 20.3 points in just 29.2 minutes with shooting splits of 51/44/90.

Team LeBron (No. 10) – Damian Lillard

Perhaps the hottest player in the league right now, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lillada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Damian Lillard will be one of the first reserves off the board. Portland’s been a disappointment, but Lillard has not, averaging 29.8 points and 7.9 assists.

Team Giannis (No. 11) – Jimmy Butler

Miami has been one of the better stories in the league this season, and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/butleji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jimmy Butler has a lot to do with that. He’s one of the best two-way players in the sport, averaging 20.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.2 assists in his first season in Miami.

Team LeBron (No. 12) – Ben Simmons

I’d say <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ben Simmons is one of the more underappreciated players in the NBA. He’s a tremendous talent on both ends of the floor, regardless of his lack of shooting. Simmons is averaging 16.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists for Philadelphia.

Team Giannis (No. 13) – Nikola Jokic

Who’s the best center in the NBA? Jokic, Embiid or Gobert? That’s a tough question, but Jokic has a strong case. He’s averaging 20.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists on one of the better teams in the Western Conference.

Team LeBron (No. 14) – Chris Paul

Another surprise team this season has been Oklahoma City, led by veteran <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Chris Paul, who has his swagger back after an off season a year ago. The future Hall of Famer is averaging 17.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists for the Thunder.

Team Giannis (No. 15) – Kyle Lowry

This will be <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lowryky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kyle Lowry‘s sixth consecutive All-Star appearance. That’s quite an accomplishment for the Villanova product who also won a championship last season. Lowry is averaging 19.4 points and 7.3 assists for Toronto.

Team LeBron (No. 16) – Donovan Mitchell

Hey! A Utah Jazz player! Finally! While I see Gobert as the better player, I also see Donovan getting picked above him in the draft. His athleticism will be on full display during the All-Star game and I think he’ll be a familiar face when it comes to the All-Star game for years to come.

Team Giannis (No. 17) – Russell Westbrook

Many were upset that <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Russell Westbrook made the All-Star team, but the fact is, he’s picked up his play over the last month and has been a monster. On the season, the future Hall of Famer is putting up 26.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.4 assists.

Team LeBron (No. 18) – Brandon Ingram

The Pelicans may have lost Anthony Davis over the summer, but they gained another All-Star in <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/ingrabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Brandon Ingram. He’s thrived in his new home, averaging 25.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He’s still only 22 years old and still has a ton of upside.

Team Giannis (No. 19) – Rudy Gobert

I can’t explain to you all how happy and proud I am to see Rudy Gobert in the All-Star game! People will complain that he isn’t entertaining and is the only one playing defense, but he’s just as deserving as anyone else listed here. He’s a dominant force on both ends of the court and still has plenty of room to grow.

Team LeBron (No. 20) – Bam Adebayo

The Heat made the right move by trading <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/whiteha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Hassan Whiteside to Portland, because it’s allowed <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/adebaba01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Bam Adebayo to shine. The first time All-Star is a triple-double threat for Miami, averaging 15.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

Team Giannis (No. 21) – Jayson Tatum

Many thought that <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/tatumja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jayson Tatum‘s teammate, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brownja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jaylen Brown, deserved to be an All-Star, but I think Tatum is the guy. He’s improved a ton since entering the league and has taken the offensive leap that Boston needed. He’s averaging 21.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Team LeBron (No. 22) – Domantas Sabonis

I really hate to have <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/02/05/mock-draft-rematch-utah-jazz-gobert-mitchell/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sabondo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Domantas Sabonis last here. He’s definitely not the worst player in this group, but this is how the draft goes. Sometimes friendship will come before talent. Sabonis has been Indiana’s best player, averaging 18.3 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
