Winning 40 Games with a Skeleton Crew is a Mighty Impressive Accomplishment
Think about it: Four out the Jazz’s six best players missed more than 20 games — with Alec Burks missing over 50 and Dante Exum missing the entire season. This put Quin Snyder in the super awkward position of tweaking lineups while trying to hide lesser players’ flaws.
Far too often the Jazz had to rely on Joe Ingles, Chris Johnson, Trevor Booker and Jeff Withey. And while all these guys can make a positive impact, none of them are enormous difference makers who should be heavily relied upon to win games.
That Quin and his squad won 40 games is nothing to scoff at. It would have been so easy for this team to implode and tank. Instead, they played their hearts out even while several of their best players were riding the pine.
That alone should show us just how skilled Snyder really is. We’re lucky to have him as a coach.
If healthy, I 100 percent believe the Jazz are not only in the playoffs, but battling for the fifth or sixth seed. The amount of injuries the team sustained this year was devastating.
With some luck and a truck load of former trainer Gary Briggs’ magic spray, the Jazz should be anything but a pushover next season.

While all of us were brimming with hope and anticipation at the beginning of the 2015 season, things took a sharp turn for the worst. <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Dante Exum blew out his knee.
This litany of injuries left the team in disarray. While injured players did their best to recover, minutes were shifted, lineups were toyed with and stumbles happened often. Depth, maturity, experience and scoring became significant problems throughout this process.

It was heartbreaking to watch the team struggle. For me, it caused angst that made my stomach sour. Throughout the season, the Jazz never found their footing, eventually slipping out of the playoffs.

As a fan, I get how disheartening this season was. That radiant preseason hope was shattered so suddenly as the team’s flaws continued to be opened and exposed.

But there were so many more positive things about this season than negative. And Jazz fans should recapture that hope and anticipation, because there is plenty of good on the horizon.

Here are the reasons why.

The Jazz Are the Second Youngest Team in the League and Missed the Playoffs By One Game

Yes, you read that right. Second youngest. One game.

If there’s a singular takeaway from this season, it’s experience. Far too often we saw the Jazz lose leads, show an inability to close or run out of gas. A lot of that can be chalked up to immaturity and a lack of experience. It’s hard to do something when you’ve never done it before.

Remember, this was Rodney Hood and Rudy Gobert’s first year as starters. The Jazz also had to start <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/netora01.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Raul Neto and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Trey Lyles (both rookies) for several games.

It takes time for young guys to develop, adjust and ultimately play at the NBA level for an extended amount of time.

In the future, the Jazz will have the luxury of being there before. The mistakes have been made. Now it’s time to correct them. And it’s a whole lot easier to correct mistakes when experience is on your side.

There Are Far Worse Things to Have Than a Lottery Pick

The Jazz’s lack of depth was a season-long thorn in their side. The Jazz simply didn’t have the talent to compete with the NBA’s upper-echelon teams.

Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey has his work cut out for him. But if there’s one thing he’s proven, it’s that he knows how to draft. With a track record of draft day steals like Rudy Gobert and Rodney Hood, and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/01/trey-lyles-is-making-his-mark-with-the-utah-jazz/" target="_blank">surprises like Trey Lyles, we should trust that DL knows what he’s doing.

The Jazz Have Money to Spend and Draft Picks to Trade

Another positive takeaway from this season is that the <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"https://thejnotes.com/2016/03/07/10-reasons-why-the-utah-jazz-wont-make-the-playoffs/" target="_blank">Jazz’s problems are glaring. The biggest being is that the team needs more depth — especially at the wings and backup big man positions.

googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
});

Even better, these problems are fixable.

And while getting a healthy Dante Exum and Alec Burks back next season will certainly help, I don’t think it will be enough to make the Jazz a legitimate contender.

Simply put, the Jazz have to spend money. And this year’s <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2016/04/26/yes-this-utah-jazz-season-was-a-success/2/"http://hoopshype.com/2016/03/05/nba-free-agency-2016-the-top-players/" target="_blank">free agent class has a myriad of talent. Talent that can be added to a Jazz bench that struggled mightily.
