While this jersey isn’t offensively bad by any means, it was spoiled back in February, and just the pure lack of creativity and imagination make this one of the most underwhelming jersey reveals in NBA history. Teams like the Boston Celtics can get away with the simplistic blocked lettering on a basic jersey, because it’s part of the iconic look of one of the most historic franchises in sports, but with so many better choices and colours at their fingertips, the Jazz should be doing much better than this.
It’s easy to see why this decision was made, as the jersey and uniform are so simple to make, but with a few simple tweaks and a colour change to a more iconic Jazz colour (see the yellow/orange/red gradient of the past few years), this could have been so much better, and that’s the most disappointing part.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, but given the history of the Jazz franchise and the bright, vibrant imagery and colours at the disposal of the organization, it’s incredibly hard for fans not to feel somewhat disappointed, even cheated out of something potentially fantastic. On top of these issues, black isn’t a colour that is usually synonymous with the Utah Jazz, and after some of the classics this team has produced, the fans certainly hope this one won’t be worn too often by the team in 2022/23.
Utah Jazz recently unveiled their new uniforms for the 2022/23 NBA season, and while we saw the return of an iconic look, as a whole, the fans certainly weren’t too happy about it all. Of course, there is plenty of work to do from an on court perspective, and that is way more important than a simple uniform, but these jersey’s certainly do impact the way that Utah Jazz fans and wider NBA fans look at this team going forward.

Most fans will be getting sick of the constant chopping and changing of jersey’s, but if Utah can stick with this clean, albeit somewhat unimaginative look they may start growing on the fans as the years go by.

Given some of the recent jersey’s however, especially the beloved gradient and J-Notes symbol incorporated into the Jazz wording, it’s hard to see these ones sticking around for long, especially as other teams continue to push the boundaries of what an NBA uniform can look like, particularly with the increasingly popular ‘City’ edition jersey’s we’ve seen over the past few years.

While the Jazz certainly have a lot going on with this young playoff squad, today we are going to be taking a deeper look at the jerseys this team will be wearing in the upcoming year, and rating all four of them from worst to best.

While it would have been fun to see the Jazz with several different, unique design choices, it’s easy to see why the franchise went for some kind of uniformity, but unfortunately this one is just so… nothing. The grey stripe under the arm is yet another odd design choice, because it takes away from one of the redeeming qualities of the jersey which is the bright colouring, so all around, this one is yet another miss for the 2022/23 season, and one that not many fans will likely be lining up to buy.

What makes these jersey’s even more disappointing is when fans on Twitter are posting custom designs that incorporate the state of Utah, Salt Lake City and the history of the Jazz franchise, and while it’s understandable that the franchise doesn’t want to look to social media to deal with their design choices, it certainly makes the uniform’s we’ve got a lot more underwhelming.

The bright yellow of the uniform with the black ‘Jazz’ lettering works slightly better as a combination, but it’s very easy to see that there is such a clear divide between these two, and the two that seemingly had a little bit of thought and care put into them. The one saving grace of this uniform is that the bright colours will work well opposing other teams with bright uniforms (Suns, Lakers, Heat and potentially others with the ‘City’ edition jersey’s), but overall, this is unfortunately as plain and simple as it gets.

It’s incredibly clear that the Jazz could have done much, much more with this uniform, the addition of a logo in place of writing and the clean aesthetic on a white jersey make this one not offensively bad, and it seems like many Utah Jazz fans can live with this decision. Unfortunately, after seeing the similar jersey, with the J-Note to lead off the ‘Jazz’ lettering was a much better design choice, and it just makes you wonder why the organization decided to go down the path of changing such a clean look that was popular among the fanbase.

This is a uniform with such a clean look that the franchise can get behind and market, and with such a good logo, it brings them plenty of critical marketing and merchandising opportunities and potential. It may still not be the most creative, but this may be a case of the simplicity being a strength, as this could turn into a great fan favourite uniform, despite the negative backlash that these three uniforms received online.

With such a simple look, this is the one that the Jazz will likely wear the most throughout the upcoming season, and especially with the merchandise that is releasing alongside this, it will be a good way to grow this logo as a part of the Jazz brand, especially when opposed to the boring block lettering that the previous two uniforms mentioned are laden with.

This is the jersey that is most synonymous with the Utah Jazz franchise, and after a brief appearance in the 2019/2020 NBA season as a throwback, it’s back full-time in 2022/23, with the breathtaking court to match. This uniform is most famously linked to the days of John Stockton and Karl Malone, and while the current squad may never reach back-to-back NBA Finals like those units did, this is a fantastic way to pay homage and bring back one of the best looking jersey’s in not only Jazz history, but arguably NBA history.

There has been some rumblings from parts of the fanbase that see this jersey as overused, but it’s just so good that it makes sense to add this as a permanent jersey, now all the Utah Jazz have to do is find a suitable counterpart or two, so that all of their uniforms can be as unique, vibrant and potentially historic as this one.

Given the history and the pure brilliance of this jersey, from the colour to the simplistic yet brilliant design, it was a great decision from the Jazz franchise to bring it back. Simply put, this was the obvious best move for the organization to make, and if the on court product in 2022 is anywhere near the quality it has been over the past few seasons, this one is sure to be the best selling jersey in Jazz history.
<!—pageview_candidate—>
">
