Verdict
The Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons made a trade that may pan out for both squads in the long run, but as of right now, it hasn’t created any long-term returns for the teams. Both the Pistons and Jazz failed to make the playoffs, and when it comes to the Pistons, they weren’t even close.
Bogdanovic was supposed to be a running buddy of sorts with Cade Cunningham, but due to Cunningham’s injury, the pair never developed much chemistry. The Pistons lack a lot of good talent that can be relied on for wins, and while Bogdanovic helps them, he’ll never be as valuable to the franchise as he is right now.
Not trading him doesn’t make much sense. While it was a mighty swing the Pistons just didn’t capitalize on the trade. They didn’t get better, but they also didn’t get worse. Kelly Olynyk was an easy piece to trade, and for that reason, the Pistons gets a C.
Unless they can swap Bogdanvoic for a high-pick, it’ll be a trade doomed to be forgotten by time.
The Jazz are in the same boat in that regard. Olynyk didn’t move the needle for the team and is likely to be the answer to an obscure piece of sports trivia more than a component for a championship win.
That is unless the Jazz swaps him for something more valuable. Until that happens, like the Pistons, the Jazz are getting a C on this trade.

We’ll get to Gobert and Mitchell eventually, but first, we’re going to talk about the Bogdanovic trade. So let’s start with the beginning of it.

Trade Recap

The Pistons acquired Bogdanovic for <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/09/one-year-later-grading-utah-jazz-trade-bojan-bogdanovic-withthe-detroit-pistons/3/"https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/04/3-trade-ideas-utah-jazz-absolutely-need-pass/">Kelly Olynyk and Saben Lee. While Olynyk is still with the Jazz as of press time, Lee is now with the Phoenix Suns, via a two-way contract. Bogdanovic is also with the Pistons still, but due to his age, he could be traded rather soon.

2022-2023 season results

Neither the Jazz nor the Pistons made the playoffs in 2022-2023. The Pistons went just 17-65 after losing star guard Cade Cunningham. Despite the loss of their star player, the trade worked out for the team, as Bogdanovic shot over 40% from three and scored a career-high 21.6 points per game.

The Jazz faired better record-wise, going 37-45 and narrowly missing the play-in tournament. The team didn’t use Lee at all, but Olynyk saw a lot of time. The big Canadian averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, shooting just below 40% from three-point range.

While both teams didn’t make the playoffs, both of the key players in the swap did help the team tremendously. Bogdanovic’s offense helped the Pistons avoid an even worse season, while Olynyk helped give Walker Kessler time to develop. Both men are going to be big pieces for their respective squads in 2023-2024, one way or another.
