John Wall
Of all the names we’ve talked about so far, John Wall seems like the most likely to come in and provide what the Jazz truly needs. He’s an effective passer still, and while he lacks any true jumper that the Jazz have in other players, his all-around skills as a passer and a defender make him a more stable option compared to others already on the roster. His arrival would likely lead to Kris Dunn or someone of that ilk getting let go, so maybe Wall only gets brought in if and when it becomes obvious that Dunn isn’t the guy.
Goran Dragic
It’s hard to say that Goran Dragic is a starter anymore, he’s clearly not. But he’s not Wall in that regard. You’re bringing in Wall to start, you’re bringing in Dragic to stabilize the position should the team need depth and a veteran voice in the locker room. He’s also still got some skills that would be advantageous for the team, namely his ability to pull up and shoot from anywhere on the court. He’s not as quick as he once was, but in the right offense, with the right co-stars, he can still be an effective player for 15 or 20 minutes a game.
The Utah Jazz have a need at point guard that may not be met by anyone on the roster. Collin Sexton and Keyonte George are currently the most likely to take the reigns but there’s little in the way of a veteran point guard on the team that can take over if things don’t stabilize. So a veteran addition may be needed, especially since a lot of the Jazz’s success last year was with Mike Conley running things.

Outside of that, you have Talen Horton-Tucker, Kris Dunn, and maybe someone like Johnny Juzang, but he’s more of a shooting guard. You can always try Jordan Clarkson but he’s likely to be the same type of fit as Sexton. This in itself gives us another issue, can Clarkson and Sexton play together on the same team, and at the same time, and produce a winning product?

Dunn seems like a candidate, he truly does, but his lack of shooting and struggles staying healthy is going to be an issue for him to eek past Sexton and George, but Dunn seems like the best fit for what the Jazz need; a pass-first guard.

So if George and Sexton stumble, or get injured, the team will need a free-agent veteran to help smooth things over. Granted, at this point, the best free agent guards are gone, and the ones that are left are older, and better fit the Jazz’s cap needs, but these six names could help the team if the goal for 2023-2024 is to compete.

Kemba Walker

<a href=https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/23/6-free-agent-point-guards-the-utah-jazz-need-to-consider-signing/2/"https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/21/the-utah-jazz-are-surprisingly-predicted-to-be-a-playoff-contender/">Talking about potential starters, the only one that seems reliable or doable, compared to who is still available that is, would be Kemba Walker. Walker is past his glory days and his knees aren’t great, but he did put on a performance in Dallas for a few games anyway.

As with John Wall, Walker isn’t coming in to back up anyone. He’s an emergency option for guys like Collin Sexton and Keyonte George struggle. He’s not the passer Wall is, but he’s still got good enough vision to lead an offense.

Matt Dellavedova

If you’re looking for a pass-first option, that’s Matthew Dellavedova. Not only is he a good passer, but he’s a great hustle player. You can beat him when he’s on defense, but he’ll keep coming after you until you get tired. He’s a terrible offensive weapon, however. Dellavedova would help give the Jazz depth and versatility at the position but if you’re starting him at this point in his career, something has gone terribly wrong. He’s only an option if there are injuries and a guy like Kirs Dunn gets traded, or is released.

Otherwise, there’s no real reason to bring him in. That said, he has a championship pedigree, so he may provide something as a player coach.

Raul Neto

It was just announced on July 22 that Raul Neto has signed to play overseas, but that doesn’t mean he can’t come in and can’t find success with the Jazz should the team decide they want him. Most overseas contracts have clauses that allow players to pick the NBA over them should that happen. Neto would be a genuine starter for the team if Kris Dunn, Collin Sexton, and Keyonte George struggle.

He’s someone who can do a <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/23/6-free-agent-point-guards-the-utah-jazz-need-to-consider-signing/2/"https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/21/the-utah-jazz-are-surprisingly-predicted-to-be-a-playoff-contender/">little bit of everything. He can score, pass, play defense, and be a floor commander. If the Jazz opt to bring him back for a second go-around, then Neto may just break out, as he’s the type of spark plug the team genuinely needs. So if Dunn, Sexton, and Geroge fail, Neto would be your best bet.

Mac McClung

Bringing in Mac McClung would just make the Jazz exciting. They may not be better with McClung on the team over, say Dunn, but he’s someone that would instantly bring a ferocity to the squad that seems to be lacking at the moment. He’s a deceptively good player, who just needs a chance to shine in a role made for him. Is that in Utah? Likely not, but if the point guard situation goes to heck in a handbasket, why not bring him in?
