Rudy Gobert, C

Utah Jazz fans may be disappointed to see a Warriors deal that doesn’t include rookie forward Jonathan Kuminga.

Sorry folks: we’re beholden to realism. The Warriors are already parting with first-time All-Star Andrew Wiggins here. His contract is necessary to make the money work. Wiggins and Kuminga feels like the type of package the Dubs may reserve for a top 10 player.

This is still a good haul for Gobert. James Wiseman has struggled in his NBA career, but he’s not far removed from being a second overall pick. He still has potential as a rim protecting big who offers a semblance of floor spacing to boot.

Moses Moody has struggled to see the floor for the Warriors during his rookie campaign. That’s to be expected for a freshman on a contending team. He’s still looked the part of a high IQ, versatile 3-and-D wing when he has had the opportunity to suit up this year.

Wiggins is no slouch either. At 27, he’s still young enough to be part of a rebuild if the Jazz are able to expedite their timeline. Otherwise, his contract, while hefty, should be moveable down the road.

The Warriors threaten to assemble the best defense in NBA history with this deal. The frontcourt would be anchored by arguably the two best defenders of their generation in Gobert and Draymond Green. This deal is attractive to them for that obvious reason. Steve Kerr may be able to unlock some of Gobert’s potential as a short-roll passer / dribble hand-off hub, and he’ll surely be able to make use of his elite screening.

As a Utah Jazz fan, you probably don’t care how this deal benefits the Warriors. Fortunately, like every deal here, it puts the Jazz in a better position for the future.

That&#8217;s fair enough, but interest has to run both ways to make a trade happen.</p> <p>It&#8217;s a little difficult to cobble together a good deal with the Mavericks. They&#8217;re light on both interesting young players and draft capital. The NBA&#8217;s Stepien Rule disallows them from going without first-round picks in consecutive seasons. With so many first-round picks already outgoing, there are barrier to making a deal work here.</p> <p>Still, where there&#8217;s a will, there&#8217;s inevitably a way.</p> <p>This trade may appeal to the Jazz if they&#8217;re focused on restocking their war chest. The Jazz, like the Mavericks, are lacking in first-round picks for the foreseeable future. This trade helps them strengthen that asset base.</p> <p>Distant picks like the 2027 first-rounder the Jazz receive here hold a unique value. They&#8217;re the ultimate mystery box for an NBA team. Still, if the Utah Jazz are forced to undergo a full-fledged rebuild, this pick could be a huge asset by the time they&#8217;re ready to compete again.</p> <div class="next-slide slider"> <a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #00265D" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://thejnotes.com/2022/04/04/3-rudy-gobert-trades-utah-jazz/3/"#"> <span class="title">Next:</span>&nbsp;Another Gobert trade </a> </div><!—pageview_candidate—><hr id="pagebreak"><div id="attachment_88720" class="wp-caption aligncenter"> <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2022/04/04/3-rudy-gobert-trades-utah-jazz/3/"https://thejnotes.com/wp-content/uploads/imagn-images/2017/07/13893725.jpeg">"Utah
