Seth Curry
Once again, I know that guards aren’t the primary concern for the Jazz, but reliable 3-point shooting most certainly is. Seth Curry may not be as prolific of an offensive threat as his brother, but the Curry shooting gene still flows through him – he shot 42.5 percent from deep this past season and is at 43.2 percent for his career.
That kind of accuracy would be extremely valuable for a Jazz team that needs to add more reliable 3-point shooting, particularly off the bench. Curry would make a nice insurance policy for Dante Exum and possesses plenty of tools to make him a promising player.
And who knows, perhaps in Utah’s renowned development program, the Jazz could truly turn him into Steph Curry lite.
Whether that’s feasible or not, even the current version of Seth would be a nice addition, especially considering that the impending unrestricted free agent made just over $3 million this past season. If he were interested in joining a top team in the West (one that is closer to competing with his brother’s squad than most of the rest of the conference), he could potentially find a nice home with the Jazz.
Utah Jazz 2017-18 season officially coming to a close, all attention has been turned towards the offseason. This Jazz team turned in an impressive year, but now the focus has to be placed on how they can improve even further in order to get past the giants in the West such as the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets.

Doing so will be no easy task and will certainly require the Jazz front office to be judicious in every aspect of the offseason including the draft, free agency and potential trade market. However, there has been a lot of debate among the Utah faithful lately regarding what this summer should entail for the Jazz.

Should they aim to largely keep the team together, make internal improvement the main focus and see what they can accomplish next season before getting too risky? Or should Utah get aggressive and look to make major moves this summer while several teams find themselves strapped for cash?

That’s a tough choice facing Dennis Lindsey and Co. It’s likely that the decision they make will largely hinge on what opportunities and circumstances arise across the league. Rest assured, though, that no matter the method, this Jazz team will look to get better this summer. And while I can’t answer whether they’ll aim to do that by concentrating mainly on internal improvement or by making a splash, I do think it’s safe to say we’ll see some degree of roster changes.

Those changes may not be drastic, but expect the Jazz to be players in free agency and plan to bring in at a minimum some complimentary pieces that could help the team patch up some holes. As such, I’ve compiled a list of seven potential free agents the Jazz could pursue that could help them accomplish just that.

Now bear in mind, these aren’t your headliner free agents. There’s no <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">LeBron James or <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/georgpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Paul George to be found here. Heck, even the likes of <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jabari Parker or <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gordoaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Aaron Gordon are too big of names for what I’m talking about. These seven guys are largely under-the-radar prospects, who though they wouldn’t necessarily completely move the needle for the Jazz, they could certainly be helpful.

The qualifications I looked for in these guys include that they are realistically attainable, they help the Jazz patch up some obvious need (three-point shooting, play-making, additional hard-nosed defense, etc.) and they made under $4 million last season and don’t figure to be in for huge pay-days this summer.

That would exclude guys like Parker or Gordon who will likely receive hefty offers as well as someone like <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/evansty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tyreke Evans (who I actually like for the Jazz, by the way) who was on an affordable contract last year, but likely will be in for a bump in pay due to solid play. It also excludes a few fringe guys like <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hezonma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Mario Hezonja (another one I like for Utah) who made just over $4 million last season.

With that being the case, as I said, these seven guys aren’t world-movers by any means, but they all certainly provide things to be excited about and could be nice under-the-radar pickups for the Utah Jazz.

Jose Calderon

OK, don’t roll your eyes at me, hear me out first on this one. I know that <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/caldejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jose Calderon is 36 years old and that his best years are far behind him. I also know that the Jazz are pretty much set at the guard positions with <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/rubiori01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ricky Rubio and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mitchdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Donovan Mitchell making up the starting backcourt and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Dante Exum (assuming he’s retained) and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/onealro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Royce O’Neale coming off the bench.

However, there’s a decent chance that the Jazz and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/netora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Raul Neto end up parting ways this summer, and if they do, Jose Calderon could be a nice stopgap as the third-string point guard. He’s proven with Cleveland this season that he still has plenty left in his tank. Though his shooting has struggled somewhat in the playoffs, during the regular season he shot 50.3 percent from the field and an astounding 46.4 percent from deep.

That right there checks off a nice box for the Jazz – they need additional 3-point shooters and Calderon would help provide that. Even if his minutes and opportunities were limited, he’d be invaluable as a veteran leader and potential injury replacement.

Not only can he shoot well, but Calderon is as savvy and experienced as any point guard in the league at running an offense. He’s gritty to boot and a relentless hustler, even for his age. Again, he’s not going to push the Jazz to another level, but he’s about as steady of an option for a third-string guy as they come. Not to mention, as a Spaniard himself, Calderon would likely have an excellent chemistry with starting point guard Ricky Rubio.

His personality and play style appear as if they would be ideal fits for the Jazz, and considering that he is an unrestricted free agent that made just over $2 million this past season, he could be an affordable target for the Jazz that brings veteran experience while bolstering their guard play off the bench.

Luc Mbah a Moute

Of all the players on this list, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mbahalu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Luc Mbah a Moute is probably the least “under-the-radar”. Part of that is because he has played on some high profile teams, but more than that, he’s built a reputation as a solid defender. Dennis Lindsey’s goal heading into the 2017-18 season was to build a team that made opponents feel like they were visiting the world’s worst dentist. Mbah a Moute’s lock-down D would only further that experience.

Not only that, but he’s become a much-improved 3-point shooter and his versatility as a three or four would be extremely valuable for the Jazz. He only made just over $2 million this past year, but his play with the Houston Rockets could very well have him in for a decent pay raise.

And as an unrestricted free agent, he may be apt to pursue more money than what Houston could pay him. Therefore, the Jazz should certainly keep tabs on what could be a savvy pickup for them to help bolster their already daunting defense.

Glenn Robinson III

Heading into the 2017-18 NBA season, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/robingl02.html" ref="nofollow">Glenn Robinson III figured to be an important part of a young Indiana Pacers team. Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for nearly the entire season. Even when he did return in late February, he was used sparingly and ultimately found himself out of the rotation come playoff time.

Still, he’s shown a lot of promise in the past as an athletic wing player, and his 3-point shooting has become an exceptional weapon as well. He’s improved every season, going from 37.8 percent in 2015-16, to 39.2 percent in 2016-17 to 41.2 percent in 2017-18. Assuming he’s able to have a productive offseason that allows him to get back up to snuff after the ankle injury, I’d love to see what the Jazz could do with the promising 24-year-old.

Robinson has the potential to play and defend multiple positions and if the Jazz could help him maximize his athleticism to become a more prolific offensive threat while still excelling from deep, I could see him becoming a nice part of their second unit.

There’s certainly some risk involved with Robinson, but considering that his potential is still sky-high and that he was paid just over $1.5 million this past year and likely will struggle to find a team willing to break the bank on him, he could be a nice free agent addition for the Jazz to pursue at a bargain price.

Montrezl Harrell

<a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/harremo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Montrezl Harrell likely doesn’t make sense for the Jazz if they retain <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/favorde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Derrick Favors, but if D-Favs decides to part ways, he could be a nice pickup. The six-foot-eight big man had a solid season with the LA Clippers and could be beneficial for the Jazz as an extra big known for his hustle and grit.

He’s improved offensively and closed out the season extremely well. It would be nice to see his rebounding numbers go up, but he has the potential to be a solid rebounder off the bench, while giving the Jazz some size if they needed to go big against opposing teams.

Harrell is a restricted free agent, meaning the Clippers would have to decide to pass on him in order for the Jazz or any other team to be able to get him. He’s more than likely to see a nice bump in pay from the $1.4 million he made this past season, but it remains to be seen what he’ll command on the open market. If it’s too much for LA to want to bite, it’s likely the Jazz won’t want to offer him too much either.

However, if the Clippers opt to move on and Harrell can be had at a fair price, I like the thought of adding him to a rugged Jazz roster that may need to add some size if Derrick Favors leaves the team.

Nemanja Bjelica

In a lot of ways, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bjeline01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Nemanja Bjelica is kind of a one-trick pony, but he’s really good at that trick. He’s an assassin from deep, shooting 41.5 percent from behind the arc. In the Minnesota Timberwolves’ first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets, he shot an incredible 57.1 percent.

His defense (or lack thereof) is a little concerning, but as a shooter off the bench, he could be extremely valuable. The Jazz could certainly use the floor-spacing he would provide and his threat from deep could help jump-start their offense. Not only that, but I feel like his defense isn’t hopeless and that Quin Snyder and Co. could help him make strides in that regard.

Bjelica hails from Serbia, and considering that the Jazz have put together a melting pot of international players, he could find himself feeling right at home with this Jazz roster. He is a restricted free agent and was only making just under $4 million this past year, but considering some of the hefty contracts on Minnesota’s books, the Timberwolves may be willing to let him walk in free agency.

If they do, the Jazz should certainly consider adding the dangerous deep-ball threat to their roster.

Fred VanVleet

Last, but not least, if the Jazz are looking for a jack-of-all trades guard who would fit the mold of a Jazzman, then they should look no further than <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/v/vanvlfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Fred VanVleet. The second-year player out of Wichita State was incredible for the Toronto Raptors this past season, and even though they struggled in the postseason, he was a big reason why their bench was so good throughout the regular season and helped spur the team to 59 wins.

He’s a high IQ player that plays hard and defends well. But, once again, a trait that the Jazz may value the most is his three-point shooting. VanVleet burnt the nets down from deep this past year, converting at a 41.4 percent clip.

The concern would obviously be where he would fit in a crowded Utah backcourt, but with the likes of Dante Exum and <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2018/05/12/utah-jazz-seven-potential-under-radar-free-agent-targets/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/burksal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Alec Burks having less than certain futures with the Jazz, if Utah could steal VanVleet at a friendly rate, they may be wise to lock him down as an ideal rotation player for years to come.

He’ll certainly be worth more than the $1.3 million he made this past year, but he is an unrestricted free agent, meaning that if the Jazz can offer him a desirable situation and nab him at a reasonable price, he could be an exceptional pickup for a team that could use his shooting and effort.
