In this look back at the Utah Jazz regular season and first-round win over OKC, we honor radness in Jazzdom; from Donovan Mitchell to new jerseys.
If you’re a hardcore fan of the Utah Jazz, you may be feeling some conflicting emotions right now. Sure, the Jazz band shocked the world by making the playoffs and dispatching the OKC 3 in six and that’s pretty groovy.
However, the team also just got waxed by the Houston Rockets, finds itself without the services of starting point-man Ricky Rubio and could be facing a quick exit in Round 2.
Those things are all what one may refer to as “sucky.”
Nevertheless, I’m here to tell Jazz Nation to forget all of that. The 2017-18 season has been one of the RADDEST on record for the franchise. So many great things have gone down in the last year and there still could be more to come.
In an effort to both recognize and celebrate the good things Jazz fans have received this season, it’s my honor and privilege to present to you the first-ever Kyrylo Fesenko Awards For Radness In Jazzdom; named after the trash-talking, rim-rocking man himself, Big Fes.
Perhaps nothing in Jazzdom reflects radness like Fesenko (Kelly Tripucka’s mustache comes close). That said, radness abounds during what’s been a banner year for the Jazz.
So, without further ado, here are the honorees!

“I told y’all!” award for post-Jazz success

The Fesenko goes to… Trey Burke.

I don’t know how Trey Burke does it. He fails sensationally in Utah despite getting handed the keys to the kingdom as a rookie. Later, he gets busted for texting his naked junk to random females. On his way out of Utah, he blasts the franchise and even goes scorched-earth on his alma mater.

And yet, somehow, dude still gets the last laugh.

After legions of Jazz fans, including myself, wrote him off as an NBA player, he returned in spectacular fashion with the New York Knicks this season. In 36 games with the Knicks, he averaged 13 points in just 22 minutes per game and shot over 50 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range.

Also, he did this —

The Fesenko goes to… Joe Ingles.

I’m pretty sure Joe Ingles did my taxes in 2007. I had always just gone with the general deduction, but he opened my eyes to the awesome world of itemizing and blew up my federal return in a major way! Thanks, Joe!

Now, he plays basketball and does it spectacularly. This year, he set a Jazz franchise record for 3-point makes, knocking down 204 longballs, and finished in the top five league-wide in 3-point percentage at .440.

That’s pretty rad.

BMF award for being a BMF

The Fesenko goes to… Rudy Gobert.

Make no mistake about it, Rudy Gobert is a bad, bad man.

He’ll dunk on your eye, then land on your lifeless body. He’ll swat your shot so hard, the ball will break the limbs of some poor soul in the seventh row. His very presence under the basket will leave you petrified at the very notion of coming within 10 feet of the rim.

Just ask Russell Westbrook.

Best of all, when you count his team out, he’ll tell you you’re wrong on Twitter, back it up on the court by carrying his squad to the promised land, then come back and tell you how stupid you were to have been a hater.

Worst social media hashtag

The Fesenko goes to… #TankNote.

To the people who started this movement, I totally feel you. There’s undeniably a method to the madness of tanking and, when you started the #TankNote hashtag, the Jazz were just a handful of games out of securing the pingpong balls needed to vie for a top draft pick.

As bloggers, it’s our job to take the latest in Jazzland, make it interesting/entertaining and keep everyone engaged with what’s to come and #TankNote is just the vehicle certain folks chose to ride or die with. That’s all this thing was and for that…I salute them.

It just proved to be spectacularly wrong. The Jazz won nearly 50 games and are among the elite eight of the league after Round 1 of playoff action. Few could have predicted this level of turnaround, but a lot of us felt pretty strongly that 19-28 wasn’t an accurate representation of what was brewing in the Wasatch Front.

You’re still rad, you of the #TankNote movement, but this one didn’t even draw iron.

Raja Bell honorary trophy for moping, then heading to Cleveland

The Fesenko goes to… Rodney Hood.

I definitely didn’t see this one coming.

After Gordon Hayward bolted for Beantown last summer, it was more or less preordained that Rodney Hood would become the go-to guy for the Jazz. The team even sent Johnnie Bryant to run him through the same regimen that helped Hayward become an All-Star last season to prepare him for top billing.

It’s a role he never really got a handle on. Instead, he was supplanted in the starting five by Mitchell, after which he got mopey and became determined to find new digs.

Now, he’s gone from having what looked to be a career year in Utah to being the fifth option in the Cleveland Cavaliers offense and something of an afterthought.

Ouch.

Raddest jersey addition to the Jazz kit collection

The Fesenko goes to… Utah’s gold Statement Edition uniforms.

Yeah, I said it! I like the gold ones better…and you should too! #HotTakeAlert

Don’t get me wrong, the Jazz’s gradient City Edition uniforms are awesome in concept. And, really, I kind of dig them. But that big ol’ UTAH splashed across the chest in the most generic font imaginable does nothing for me. Also, the I-15 thing is lost on almost everybody (and I freaking hate I-15).

I’d still like to see a J-Note or something, somewhere on there, as well. The Statement jerseys hit a home run in that department; it’s a bold, new look without abandoning the team’s history completely.

I totally understand wanting to have our own identity and the City jerseys have a cool color scheme to be sure. But you can’t just take the Jazz out of this team. Can’t we have the best of both worlds?

Most righteous dude

The Fesenko goes to… Ricky Rubio.

Ricky Rubio is kind of my hero. He caught grief for much of the season from fans and pundits alike, but quietly went about his business of getting better nonetheless. By year’s end, he was a key cog in one of the greatest turnarounds in league history and the Jazz’s undisputed floor general.

Rubio may be even better off the floor. He’s super involved in the local community, he’s a champion for cancer research and he takes every opportunity to tell the world how great it is to be a Jazzman.
