Yoeli Childs – BYU forward
Yoeli Childs had an impressive college career at BYU, and over four years at Brigham Young, he managed to improve in every way over his time, and while it hasn’t translated into success at the next level yet, he will still have plenty of opportunities to find himself in an NBA uniform in the future. Childs has just announced that he will be heading to Germany to play with Hamburg Towers, but before then, he has accepted an invite to Summer League with the Jazz, where he will put his versatile scoring ability on display, in hopes of making it back to the States and the next level in the coming years.
In his final season at BYU in 2019-20, Childs averaged 22 points and 9 rebounds a game, while shooting 48% from beyond the arc, and while that may not be possible at the next level, he certainly has the size and ability to be a consistent scorer off the bench. He hasn’t been able to find consistent playing time on a team since going un-drafted in 2020, but if he can impress in the Summer League in Utah and then head out to Germany and continue to improve his game, he’s still young and experienced enough to potentially find playing time in the NBA in the future.
Utah Jazz are following up their uneventful draft by continuing to add names to their Summer League roster, and while they didn’t make any splashy moves to get back into the draft, the young players they are adding certainly have the potential to be good players in the near future. The biggest name is <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2022/06/26/utah-jazz-are-quickly-filling-out-their-summer-league-roster/3/"https://thejnotes.com/2022/06/24/utah-jazz-sign-un-drafted-ucla-rookie-johnny-juzang/">UCLA’s Johnny Juzang, who was added immediately following the NBA draft, but since that point, he’s been joined by several talented names, and it should have Jazz fans excited to see this young squad, as many of the names could become depth pieces for this team over the next year or two.

Salt Lake City Summer League takes place from July 5-7, with the Jazz being joined by Memphis, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia, before all the teams join the rest of the NBA in Las Vegas from July 7-17, and with so many roster spots available, the Jazz have been proactive in adding high potential names.

You’re likely not going to see many of these win starring roles for this team in the upcoming 2022/23 NBA season, but if they can impress Danny Ainge and the front office enough, there’s no doubting that we could be seeing some of these names play key parts for this Jazz team as they look to take the next step over the next few years.

Kofi Cockburn – Illinois center

Kofi Cockburn had a fantastic career at Illinois, where he averaged 17 and 10 over a three year career, and while he does have some severe limitations on offense, his feel for the game, size and athletic ability will always give him a chance to succeed, no matter what level of basketball he is playing. With those three years under his belt, he is more than experienced enough to step into an NBA role, but if the Jazz want to bring him along slowly as a potential successor, or depth piece to replace Rudy Gobert if they move on from him, then they may have themselves a great player for the future in Cockburn.

His range in college never really expanded, so the Jazz will either need to live with his power and explosive athletic ability if they want to bring him along, or have him play in the G-League and try to expand the range, which could make him an incredibly valuable piece off the bench. All of this may be a bit premature, but for now, Cockburn impressed in his interviews with the Utah Jazz, and has earned himself a Summer League invite, and if he can impress again on the court against the NBA’s brightest young players, he may be in line for a full time roster spot with the Jazz down the line.

Jeenathan Wiliams – Buffalo Wing

Jeenathan Williams is another name that has improved over a four year college career, with his best season in 2021/22 showing that he can score with the best of them, averaging 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game for Buffalo. Williams also managed to shoot 45% from beyond the arc, and at the next level, despite going un-drafted in the 2022 draft, projects to be a good scorer on all three levels, and if he can continue to impress this organization in Summer League, he may find himself on the fringe of an NBA spot in 2022/23.

To make it at the next level, Williams certainly has to improve on the defensive end, but given his size, standing at 6’5″ and 205 pounds, he should be able to stand up to the biggest and best wings in the NBA, and could be an absolute steal for this Utah franchise that finds themselves at a cross roads right now. Shooting will always play at the NBA level in today’s game, and if Williams can continue to improve and put up impressive numbers during the summer, there’s no reason why he won’t be able to find a G-League spot in 2022/23 and continue his rise to the next level.

Darryl Morsell – Marquette guard

If you haven’t noticed a theme yet with the Summer League squad the Jazz are currently building, it seems to be experienced, productive college players that improved their numbers across the board throughout their careers, and that’s something that Marquette’s Darryl Morsell also has. While he doesn’t project to be as good a shooter from beyond the arc as Williams and Childs, Morsell has an impressive game, based on his athleticism and scoring ability from two, which allowed him to average 13 points a game in his fifth season at Marquette.

googletag.enableServices();
googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
});

Morsell doesn’t have one overwhelming strength, but most importantly, he doesn’t have an overwhelming weakness either, and could play a big part in a Summer League run for the Jazz in 2022. He doesn’t project as a high-potential player at the next level like some of the other players Utah have already added for Summer League, but there’s no reason that he can’t impress at Summer League and continue grinding in professional basketball, it’s just less likely that he will have a shot at the NBA in the near future.

Jordan Usher – Georgia Tech Wing

Another player that improved mightily over a five-year college career, Jordan Usher, standing at an impressive 6’7″ and 220 pounds could be one of Utah’s players to watch at Summer League, as he has the ability to stand out above anyone else with his scoring and impressive athleticism for his size. At the next level, Usher projects to be a slashing wing that can score inside the arc and defend either wing spot well, and if he can work on his three point shooting, we may be looking at a significant future NBA contributor.

In his final season at Georgia Tech, Usher averaged 19, 8 and 4, and if anyone on this Summer League roster has the raw and natural ability to step up to the next level, it’s this 23-year old with plenty of experience and potential. Usher was consistent with his improvement, and didn’t miss a game for Georgia Tech after transferring in 2019, and all of these things should have Utah incredibly excited about his future.
