Khris Middleton
Playing in the shadow of Giannis Antetokounmpo has put Khris Middleton in the category of ‘severely underrated’. Though he’s made the All-Star team for the past two seasons, I’m not sure Middleton will ever get the credit he deserves.
Middleton is a guy that would have interested the Jazz when he was a free agent, but the Bucks were able to re-sign him to a massive contract. That contract (five-year, $178 million) makes it hard to trade him, but if you both sides get creative, you could figure something out.
I will say this — I doubt the Bucks would want to break up what they have. They are championship contenders and making a move like this is a major risk. Acquiring Gobert, though, would take them to another level defensively, which is scary.
The Jazz, meanwhile, would have a new top scoring option in Middleton. He would a lot of pressure off of Donovan Mitchell, who does a ton of creating for the Jazz. Middleton can get buckets from anywhere on the court, and he’s a positive defender as well.
Milwaukee is an interesting trade partner here. Part of me wonders if the Jazz could look elsewhere on the roster (Eric Bledsoe, Donte DiVincenzo) for a deal. If they were able to add Gobert without losing Middleton, you might as well hand them the championship now.
Middleton may be a dream target for the Utah Jazz, but probably not the most realistic one either. Still, it’s worth a call to the Bucks.
Utah Jazz. Once viewed as a team that could contend for a championship, the Jazz are now in a difficult spot that could eventually see them dealing their All-Star center, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Rudy Gobert.

Gobert and his teammate, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mitchdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Donovan Mitchell, may have made progress towards improving their relationship, but the trade speculation isn’t going to go away. Gobert will be one of the more popular names on the rumor mill for the next few months.

The Jazz are going to extend Donovan Mitchell, and if they have doubts about his pairing with Gobert in the future, or simply paying Gobert a ton of money, the trade becomes a realistic option.

What follows said trade will have a direct impact on Utah’s future. They can trade Gobert for draft compensation and look to build more towards the future, or they can look to acquire an All-Star caliber player in return.

Remember, this isn’t something that the Jazz have to do. While it may upset fans, the possibility of moving on from Gobert has to be viewed as a legitimate option. Seriously, it hurts me just as much as anyone else. I love that man and what he has done for this team.

Draft compensation is always nice, but if the Utah Jazz eventually do decide to trade Gobert, I see them looking more towards a move that allows them to compete right away. Take Gobert off this team and things will probably get ugly, but if you get an All-Star in return, they may be able to remain in playoff contention in the Western Conference.

With that being said, let’s take a look at three former All-Star players that could be good matches in a trade for Rudy Gobert.

Klay Thompson

This is definitely an interesting one. One that also might have some readers spit out their drink in disgust. Would the Golden State Warriors break up the Splash Brothers to make room for what would be the best defensive frontcourt in the NBA? It’s something to at least consider.

The Warriors were straight-up embarrassing during the 2019-20 season.

<a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/curryst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Stephen Curry missed most of the season with a hand injury, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thompkl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Klay Thompson missed all of the season recovering from ACL surgery, and they eventually traded their star free-agent addition in <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/russeda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">D’Angelo Russell.

It was a tough pill to swallow for fans who grew accustomed to Golden State’s winning ways. This down year does give the Warriors a top choice in this year’s draft, which they could eventually use as trade bait. That could interest a team like Utah, but nabbing an All-Star player to remain competitive is more likely.

The casual fan will probably tell you that Thompson is a far better player than Rudy Gobert, but that’s not the case. You wouldn’t look foolish claiming Gobert was the better player prior to Klay’s injury, and wouldn’t look foolish claiming it after the fact.

The guy is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, an all-time great rim protector and one of the most efficient scorers in NBA history.

Thompson is, though, also one of the best two-way players in basketball. He’s an elite shooter that has fit perfectly in Golden State’s system. Without him, they may not have any rings to their name. He’s someone that I would certainly say has been majorly underappreciated over the years.

Golden State is looking to reload and contend for a championship next season. They’ll be bringing back a healthy Stephen Curry, to go with the underrated <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/greendr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Draymond Green. They are especially weak at the center spot, which is why Gobert could be an interesting option for them.

Gobert and Thompson are close when it comes to salary, so putting together a deal shouldn’t be too difficult. This is, though, a drastic change for the Warriors. Thompson has been with the Warriors through thick and thin and has publically expressed his desire to remain in The Bay for his entire career.

It’s also probably not the most realistic option, but it’s also something that shouldn’t be brushed under the rug.

Nikola Vucevic

When Rudy Gobert was diagnosed with novel coronavirus, he failed to get much support from not only his teammates, but the entire NBA. While others were getting love and prayers, Gobert was practically left out to dry.

One player came to Gobert’s aid time and time again, and that player is Orlando’s <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fournev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Evan Fournier. Since then, a lot of fans have tossed around the idea of having the duo pair up. Fournier is set to enter a pivotal free agency, with Orlando looking likely to re-sign him.

I don’t see the Jazz making a move for Fournier, but the Magic do have someone that may interest the Jazz if they decide to move Gobert. <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/v/vucevni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Nikola Vucevic, who was named an All-Star during the 2018-19 season, could be a solid replacement.

Gobert and Vucevic are different players. Gobert is a much better defender and is superior when it comes to efficiency. Vucevic doesn’t protect the rim nearly as well as Gobert, but gives you a 7’0″ big man that can score from inside and outside. They are, though, both walking double-doubles that any team would love to have.

If you put Gobert on the Magic, they have a chance to be a special team on the defensive end. Rudy Gobert, Johnathan Isaac, <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/04/24/utah-jazz-star-attainable-gobert-trade/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fultzma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Markelle Fultz, Mo Bamba — that’s a great collection of size and length that will give opposing team nightmares.

Vucevic, meanwhile, would open up Utah’s offense as a floor-spacer. Utah would have the chance to put shooters at every position on the court, giving them an intriguing plan offensively. Defensively, they’d take a major step back, but their offense would give them a chance to compete every night.
