Jared Butler, Baylor
*Stats provided as of 3/7/20
Sophomore guard Jared Butler has been the best player on arguably the best team in the country during the 2019-20 season. Though the Bears have lost some momentum of late, they’ll still have a good chance of entering the tournament with a number one seed.
I knew Baylor would be good this season, but I didn’t think they’d be this good. Butler leads an elite guard line while averaging 15.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He hits 39 percent of his three’s and also gives you 1.6 steals per game.
He does his work on both ends of the court and plays multiple positions while doing it. He had some health concerns entering college, and I’d say that’s the main concern of mine. Skill wise, he’s got a complete game and is still getting better and better.
Butler hasn’t got as much draft love as most players on this list, but a great showing in the tournament could help him out. If he decides to come out, I could see him landing anywhere from the late first round to the middle of the second round.
Jared Butler would be an intriguing project for the Utah Jazz. He may not be the best target, but I love what I’m seeing from this 19 year old guard.
Utah Jazz is finishing the regular season strong and going into the playoffs with home court advantage, they’ll also be doing some hard scouting during the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

When the Utah Jazz acquired <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/conlemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Mike Conley last summer, they traded a future first round pick in the process. Before we start anything, let’s quickly go over Utah’s first round future, because it can be complicated for some.

2020 – Protected 1-7, 15-30

2021 – Protected 1-7, 15-30

2022 – Protected 1-6

2023 – Protected 1-3

2024 – Protected 1

If the Jazz do not convey a first round pick to the Grizzlies by 2024, they will then convey their 2025 and 2026 second round picks to Memphis.

So, given the heavy protections on the 2020 and 2021 first round picks, the Jazz will very likely not convey a pick to Memphis until 2022. They’ll be able to add some youth to the roster in what looks to be two solid classes.

The Jazz’s second round pick in this years draft will go to Golden State via a previous trade. They could always trade into the second round and buy a pick like they did last year.

The 2020 NCAA Tournament begins in just a couple of days. This is the biggest stage in college basketball. Scouts from across the NBA will be watching closely as the 2020 NBA Draft inches closer and closer each day.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at 10 prospects that will be playing in the NCAA Tournament, and that could be available for the Utah Jazz during the 2020 NBA Draft.

With what should be a late first round pick, the Jazz are going to have multiple intriguing options to choose from, and it certainly won’t be an easy decision. Let’s get started and take a look at the first prospect.

Tyler Bey, Colorado

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

Colorado forward Tyler Bey is one of my favorite players in all of college basketball. He’s under the radar, but Bey has been a steady force during his three years at Colorado. He projects to be a plus defender at the next level who can provide energy off the bench.

On the season, Bey is averaging 13.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 52 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three. He’s only made 13 three-pointers on the season, but he’s shown more confidence from outside.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/yfXqsZJtWnA?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

I love Bey’s rebounding, I love Bey’s defense and I love Bey’s energy. If he can continue to make strides as a shooter, it will open up a lot of things for him on the offensive end. His ability on both sides of the court should draw interest from teams picking late in the first round.

Bey is also very versatile and can play and guard multiple different positions. I can see him playing some small-ball five in the future, but the power and small forward positions is where he’s most comfortable.

Bey won’t wow you with his game, and he doesn’t have as much upside compared to other players, but he’s just a solid, fundamental option on both ends.

Tre Jones, Duke

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

Duke’s Tre Jones may very well be the best player and best fit for the Utah Jazz on this list. The sophomore point guard and brother of Grizzlies guard <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jonesty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tyus Jones has played like a lottery pick all season long for the Blue Devils.

Jones probably could have been drafted in the second round of last years draft, but he opted to return to school and showcase his improvements. He’s averaging 16.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.2 assists while shooting 36 percent from deep.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/FrAxvnMWBDg?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

He’s led Duke to a 22-7 (14-5 in conference) record with his tenacious defense and leadership. Duke is projected to have a top-three seed going into the tournament, and while they aren’t the favorites to go all the way, they’re looking at a deep run.

I think Jones would fit perfectly on the Jazz. They could use a young point guard to develop behind Mike Conley. His defense and playmaking are NBA ready, and if he continues to add consistency with his shot, he has a chance to be very good.

With Utah’s player development staff, I could see Jones turning into a really good starting point guard one day. He has the tools to be a pest on both sides of the ball and has a chance to increase his draft stock even more during the tournament.

The Utah Jazz had interest in Louisville forward Jordan Nwora when he tested the draft process a year ago, but they ended up trading their pick to Memphis in the Mike Conley trade, and Nwora opted to return to the Cardinals for his junior season anyway.

I would expect the Jazz to once again show interest in Nwora this year. The 21 year old has made significant jumps every single year in college and has the look of an NBA wing. He’s averaging 18.0 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 40.0 percent from three-point land.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/DoN-BeYmR00?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

Louisville should have a top-five seed going into the tournament. We’ll see how far Nwora can take them this year. Last season, they lost to Minnesota in Round 1 and Nwora had just 10 points on 4-10 shooting.

I don’t think Nwora has star upside, but I do see him playing in the league for a long time. He’s a big wing at 6’7″ and has good shooting and ball handling skills. He can play and guard multiple positions as well.

Despite his consistent improvement, Nwora still has some work to do to secure a first round selection. I do think that he’ll get there, and I think he’d be an excellent target for the Jazz late in the first round.

Myles Powell, Seton Hall

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

Seton Hall senior Myles Powell is one of the better players in all of college basketball, but that stardom doesn’t guarantee him success at the next level. He projects to be a professional scorer that is a second rounder but could sneak into the first round.

Powell is averaging 21.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists as a senior for the Pirates. His shooting are way down this year, but he’s a proven scorer. He shot 45 percent overall and 36 percent from deep a year ago, but is shooting 40 percent overall and 30 percent from deep this year.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/DHxzXd_DiRw?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

Taking him in the first round would probably be a stretch. However, I do see him having success in the NBA, and I do think that he’ll be a guy that increases his stock prior to the draft. He’s an electric guard that can help a team out instantly with his scoring ability. Could he be this years <a href=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/edwarca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Carsen Edwards?

He is a bit undersized at 6’2″ and will probably have to play more point guard in the NBA, so he’ll have to work on those skills moving forward. We know he can score, now he must prove that he can run a team, make plays for others and defend.

Powell wouldn’t be my first choice for the Jazz, but I do think he’d be an intriguing fit, especially with Utah’s developmental program.

Jahmi’us Ramsey, Texas Tech

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

Texas Tech freshman Jahmi’us Ramsey has shown rapid improvement since high school. He’s been better than expected in college and looks like a legit NBA prospect. His pure shooting stroke and toughness on defense will draw a lot of attention.

The Red Raiders will be in the tournament, and Ramsey will have the chance to show out. He’s averaging 15.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists while hitting 42 percent of his three-pointers. His shot is effortless, he’s efficient and he has a strong work ethic.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/gcj95iSt9mM?start=151&feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

The 18 year old may be a tad undersized for a two-guard at 6’4″, but he does have a strong frame and a large wingspan. The shooting is nice, the defense is nice, but what I love is his energy. He’s always playing hard and brings it every single night. He’s a flat out dog on the court.

Ramsey is still very young and I’m not sure that he will contribute to an NBA team right away, but I still view him as a late first round pick. He does so many things well and still has so much room to grow.

The Utah Jazz could be a good landing spot for a guy like Ramsey. His shooting, defense and toughness will attract scouts during the pre-draft process, if he decides to test the process.

Tyrell Terry, Stanford

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

One freshman that came out of the gates firing was Stanford’s Tyrell Terry. I was quite surprised to see how quickly he made an impact and how good he has become during his first season of college basketball.

Terry, the 19 year old point guard from Minnesota, is averaging 15.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 42 percent from deep. He’s very quick and can switch gears in the blink of an eye. His elite shooting also makes him very tough to guard.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/1PRBm_LKf9M?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

His jumper is super smooth. He doesn’t get much lift on his shot, but he has a quick release, great follow through and consistency. Terry has a lot of offensive talents at his age.

He is on the small side, being only 6’1″ tall and weighing just 160 pounds. He’ll get pushed around a bit at the next level if he decides to make that transition. Defense will also be a problem for him early on, but still, there’s a lot to like about this kid.

Terry wasn’t expected to be on any big boards or mock drafts prior to the season, but things have quickly changed. If he has a good run in the tournament, his stock will only get better, which could influence his draft decision.

If the Utah Jazz want a young point guard, Terry could be worth the development.

Devin Vassell, Florida State

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

One of the best “3&D” prospects in all of college basketball is Florida State’s Devin Vassell. The 19 year old sophomore has made a huge jump this season and has played a major role in the Seminoles’ 26-5 season.

Vassell is averaging an impressive 12.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals while hitting 42 percent from downtown. Those numbers are way up compared to a year ago when he averaged just 4.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.5 steals.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/Y_skPY2BSkY?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

He’s an elite defender that can guard multiple positions. He’s extremely versatile and will be able to play multiple positions himself. He should fit perfectly in today’s NBA with his size, length and versatility.

Vassell’s shot may look a bit awkward, considering he shoots it way above his head, but it goes in. He’s hit over 40 percent from three-point range in his two years with Florida State. He’s best when he’s catching and shooting from the outside. You don’t have to run a lot of plays for him.

Vassell is a definite first rounder that can improve his stock some more during the tournament. He’d be an ideal fit for the Jazz, but I’m not so confident that he’ll be available when they are on the clock.

The more I watch Florida State freshman Patrick Williams, the more intrigued I get. He’s raw, and he’s going to be a project, but you can see the upside he possesses. If the right team takes him, he could turn into a really good player down the line.

Williams is averaging 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks for Florida State. They should finish with a top-five seed and have the talent to make a deep run. His stats don’t jump off the page, but Williams is a fun player to watch thanks to his athleticism and energy.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://thejnotes.com/2020/03/08/utah-jazz-10-potential-draft-targets-tournament/3/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/LKRSDyVyhSg?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

Going back to school for another year or two wouldn’t hurt him, of course, but if he has a good feeling about going in the first round, perhaps he should go for it. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if a contending team takes him late and takes their time with him.

The combo forward would be an exciting prospect for any team. He’s a great athlete, has a strong frame for his age and his shooting mechanics are solid. He should fit well in today’s position-less NBA.

Williams is quickly becoming one of my favorite prospects to watch. If the Jazz opt to go with a developmental project, Williams could be the guy.

Robert Woodard II, Mississippi State

*Stats provided as of 3/7/20

Mississippi State’s Robert Woodard II is another player who has taken a huge step forward as a sophomore. It’s not very surprising, being that he’s a full-time starter these days, but it’s still impressive to see him balling out.

The 20 year old guard/forward is averaging 11.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 33.2 minutes. He’s shooting 44 percent from the three-point line and 49 percent overall. He got off to a fast start this season for the Bulldogs and hasn’t looked back.

Woodard’s biggest improvement has easily been his perimeter shooting. He’s become a dangerous threat from outside. His mechanics are solid and he gets it off in a hurry. I’d like to see him shoot even more (30-69) but the improvement is evident.

Another thing I love about Woodard is his size. He’s 6’7″ tall and has a beefy 230 pound frame. The physicality portion of the league shouldn’t be a concern at this moment. He also does a tremendous job rebounding for his position.

The Utah Jazz will have a handful of options during the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft. These 10 players could be intriguing options, but honestly, there’s a lot more prospects that you should watch during the NCAA Tournament.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
